Gerry Nott, who first assigned me to the police beat, said about awards: "You shouldn't get a big head if you get one and you shouldn't feel badly if you don't."  Pretty straight forward and, of course, absolutely correct.

That said, the award that means the most to me on a very personal level remains THE EDWARD J. HAYES AWARD for BEAT REPORTING. Why?  Because its judges assess proficiency in beat coverage which for me meant being judged on how well I covered the police beat.  Three times a bridesmaid, never a bride - until 1994.

On the night of the ceremony in Kitchener, Ont., I returned to the hotel room with the award and found a complimentary bottle of Brick Amber Dry (brewed nearby and a stubby no less).  Beer never tasted so good and it remains my favorite beer today.

Two awards for the price of one. I am doubly grateful.
